What this is

A TIN is like a tax ID number. The government tax office, URA, gives it to you for free. If you are a Ugandan adult, you can apply on the URA website using your National ID number and get your TIN straight away. Nobody should ask you to pay for it.

A TIN is free If someone asks you to pay for a TIN, that is not a URA charge. You can apply yourself for free. URA web portal

Steps

  1. Check which type of TIN you need
Individuals (including sole traders) and non-individuals (companies, partnerships, NGOs and others) need different documents. Using the wrong category delays your application. URA: Get a TIN
  2. Get your documents ready
Ugandan adults need their National ID. Have your employer's TIN ready if you are employed, or your business registration details if you have a registered business. The online form asks for these details.
  3. Open the URA portal and choose Instant TIN
On the URA web portal click Get a TIN, then Instant TIN Application, then choose Individual. This is the official free route for individuals. URA web portal
  4. Fill in and submit the form
Enter your National ID Number (NIN), source of income and current physical address, confirm you are not a robot, then submit. Fields with a red star are required. URA web portal
  5. Save your TIN and certificate
After submitting you receive an Instant TIN and a provisional TIN certificate. Keep them safe and do not let anyone else use your TIN. Your TIN is personal.
